I execute my landscape paintings
in water color, gouache, and water-soluble wax pastels (by CARAN d’ACHE) on smooth clay & textured clayboard. I do not use brushes, rather a variety of tools including cloths, scrapers and my
hands to produce marks that are painted, drawn and scratched into the surface of the clay board. I employ washes of color to create semi-transparent zones, depths in space and to encase and preserve marks
from each stage of the painting. The contrast of fluid and luminous water- media
with rigid lines and grooves evokes the New Mexican landscape and the complex interaction of natural forces that created it.
